Main tasks are teaching basic science courses for non mathematics students.

A Brief Introduction of the Physics teaching and research section

  There are 11 faculty members, in the Teaching and Research Office of Physics, among which are 1 professor(with Subject leader), 4 associate professors. Among the teaching and research staffs, 7 have PhDs and one has doctoral candidates. 72% of them are young. They formed a solitary highly educated team with energy. The office provides courses such as University Physics, Physical Experiment (parts of the course), and 2 optional courses for undergraduates. It also provides courses for its own postgraduates.

   Construction of superfine and key course for University Physics has been completed as a SMU project. It has also been completed as a key course of the Municipal Education Commission's project. The office has completed the Construction of Excellent Teaching Team in SMU. The staffs love their career, and like to take on tasks of teaching and researching. They were awarded Model Unit of Shanghai Maritime University for several times.

    Electromagnetic Theory and Microwave Technology is the only Master of Science program offered by SMU.  The office offers 4 specialized basic courses and specialized courses. 3 staffs of the team are Master Student Supervisors of the subject. Construction of the master degree station promoted the development of the subject. Thus, it turned into a new direction that laying equal stress on both teaching and researching.

    In recent years, many high-quality papers of the team have been published. Lots of them were indexed by SCI, EI and been awarded the Excellent Paper, Outstanding Contributions Prize of SMU and Ministry of Transport. The office has assumed and accomplished a number of research projects at provincial and ministerial level. It has also assumed a project from the National Natural Science Foundation of China this year. The team made a great contribution to the researching of College of Arts and Sciences.

 

A Brief Introduction of the Physics experiment teaching and research section

Physics Experiment Center located in the Liberal Arts Building in the First Teaching Area and Area B of the new campus. There are 42 rooms in total, 8 rooms in liberal arts building, 34 rooms in the Area B which cover 4,079.5 square meters, among which 3502 square meters for 36 Physics Laboratory, 354.3 square meters for 4 Intermediate Physics Laboratories, 223.2 square meters for 2 Experimental Centers of Mathematical Modeling. There are 11 teachers in the Basic Experimental Center, among which are 1 full professor, 4 associate professors, 1 lecturer, 5 Teaching assistants and 3 doctors...

The research projects the Physics Experiment Center involved in are New Technologies of Ship - shore Safe Electrical Connection and Shanghai Education Commission Integrated Circuits Oxide Insulating Layer Electrostatic Breakdown Model. The science prizes they got are The Method for Generate Sub Anti-static Insulating Material, The second prize of the Nineteenth Shanghai Excellent Invention Trials, New Technologies of Ship - shore Safe Electrical Connection, the third prize of 2004 Shanghai Science and Technology Progress. The works published are Electromagnetic Compatibility and Anti-jamming Technology, Recent Developments in Applied Electrostatics. 5 Papers published have been selected by SCI、EI、SCIE、ISTP.

 

The Physics Experiment Center consists of Physics Laboratory and Mathematical Modeling Laboratory. Their main task is to fulfill the physical laboratory education for science and engineering students of the whole college, and experimental teaching for field and microwave technology graduates. Shanghai Maritime University Foundational Physics Experiment Center bears basic experimental teaching task for graduates. The main equipments are as follows: Young's Modulus Measuring Instrument, The Moment of Inertia Measuring Instruments, Regulated Power Supply ,Slide Wire Wheatstone Bridge, Box-type Wheatstone Bridge, Slide Wire Potentiometers Deviation, The Speed of Sound Measuring Instrument, Signal Generator, Dual Trace Oscilloscope, Spectrometers, Optical Platform, Hall-effect Device, Michelson Interferometer, Lasers, Computers, Millikan Oil Drop Instrument, Bohr Resonance Instrument, Rotating Liquid Measuring Instrument, Specific Heat Ratio Analyzer, Franck-Hertz Experiment Instrument, Lightspeed Analyzer, The Metal Work Function Analyzer, Sensor Experiment Bench, Charge to Mass Ratio Analyzer, Storage Oscilloscope, Microwave Detector, Embedded Ultrasonic Detector, Large Chaotic Pendulum, Cloud Chamber, High-temperature Superconducting Altimeter Test Device, Electrostatic Dust Defogging, Microwave Technology and so on. Thus we can set nearly 30 experimental projects for undergraduates and 10 Microwave technology experimental projects for Postgraduates in electromagnetic fields and microwave techniques. Physical Experiment is the key course of Shanghai Municipal Education Committee. Once, they have won the third prize of Excellent Teaching Achievement, March 8 Advanced Collectives and Civilization Department of SMU.
