The introduction of teaching and research section of sports on land

1. The Guiding Principle of Teaching

Sport teaching on land of Shanghai Maritime University follows the major guiding ideology of educating students, conscientiously implements the idea of “health first”, and pushes forward all-around development education in order to breed students’ awareness of “lifelong sports”, to develop their ability to do exercise scientifically, and to improve the students’ physical and psychological health, and their physical and cultural qualities. Through the special function of sports teaching, the overall objective of the school education is achieved and the all-round development maritime manpower are cultivated.

 

2. Curriculum Objectives

1). The students shall master the basic sport knowledge, techniques and skills, so their constitution is strengthened and health conditions are improved.

2). In accordance with the school-running characteristics of our university, the students shall grasp necessary swimming skills and one or two sports items.

3). Sports teaching shall be combined with students’ future occupation development.

4). The students shall have the consciousness of “lifelong sports” and shall be qualified to adapt to international sport communication and entertainment of majors on land. 

5). In order to improve students’ psychological health and quality, and all-around development, the students shall be cultivated with good ideology styles, indomitable volitional quality, strong sense of competition, and strong team spirit.

6). The students shall acquire the ability to appreciate sports culture by creating campus sport cultural atmosphere and improving their sports culture accomplishment.

 

3. Curriculum

1). Required Courses for Option: Required Courses for Option are opened in the 4 semesters of the first and second year, and students shall choose one sport course every school year according to their needs and interests.

2).Theory Courses: Theory Courses include sports and health basic theory courses, teaching routine and entrance education, and swimming theory courses. Special theory which belongs to special teaching is taught in the class of practical courses based on students’ need.

3). Health Care Courses: Health Care Courses are the required courses for option mainly for the injured, ill, disable and frail freshmen and sophomores. (They must have the school hospital certificate and conduct the relevant formalities.)

4). Sports Training Courses: Sports Training Courses are established for students from the first to the forth year of ordinary sports team of university. Freshmen and sophomores are graded on their performance evaluation of sports training, while juniors and seniors get one credit per semester. And the students from the high level sports team are graded on Administrative Measures for high level sports team of Shanghai Maritime University.

 

   4. Teaching Characteristics

1). “Elective system by school year” is adopted for sports teaching on land as a substitute for the pevious “elective system by semester”. “Elective system by school year” allows the students a systematic and stable learning time and helps them to master comprehensive fitness skill, to acquire systematic fitness knowledge, and to have a thorough understanding the positive functions of specific fields. Thus they can gradually form a lifelong learning concept and systematic training ideas, and their lifetime sport consciousness.

2). Closely combined with the shipping characteristics of our university, public swimming courses are established in teaching. The students shall have 12-16 learning hours of swimming every school year. By systematic swimming learning, the students are expected to master the swimming skills especially breaststroke and to be up to the swimming distance standard.

3). Key Course: key courses of Shanghai Municipality: Martial Arts; key courses of our university: Football, Aerobic, Table Tennis.

 

5. Teaching Staff

In sports teaching and research section there are twenty-nine teachers, among whom nine are professors, three are national referees, and five are national first-level referees.

 

6. The Source of Students

The sophomores and freshmen from different colleges of our university except the Merchant Marine College.

1. Master the basic knowledge of sports, technology, skills, so as to achieve the aims of the empowerment of students ' physique , raising the level of health.

2. Based on the characteristics of our school, mastering swimming techniques and sports skills of one or more items.

3. Physical education and students ' future career and the future of international communication and entertainment activities organically combined.

4. Students have a sense of lifetime sport , so that they have a good physical and mental qualities ,and become qualified human resources which adapted to maritime specialties required for international sports and entertainment need

5. Cultivating student's moral character of patriotism, collectivism, and style of good sportsmanship, strengthen organization and discipline , making students a brave and tenacious willpower of unity and progress.

Higher level Athletic Education and Training

1、 Dragon Boat

The Brief Introduction of Dragon Boat Team

The Dragon Boat Team of Shanghai Maritime University was founded in 1977. Most members are all common domestic college students of different grades. And many of them start to learn dragon boat racing after participating in the team. Since its foundation, it has participated in many high-level international, national, and Shanghai dragon boat races, and has won numerous awards. At the end of 2005, the team was assessed and named by the Ministry of Education as High Lever Sports Team.

The aim of dragon boat team of Shanghai Maritime University is to carry forward the Chinese traditional culture, to promote friendship and mutual communication, to display elegant demeanour of students, and to create the effect of brand-name university.

Members of the Dragon Boat Team, among whom eight are first class athletes, two are second class athletes, and the rest are all common students.

In the past three years, three of the members have won the school special scholarship, four the first-rate scholarship and five the second-rate scholarship. Besides, four of them have attained Miyoshi Students title. One of them has been directly admitted as postgraduate with the exemption from National Master's Entrance Test. Four of them have become Chinese communist party members and four the probationary party members. Many of them have defined as activists. The dragon boat team has enjoyed a good reputation in the university.

Prizes won in 2012

At The Dragon Boat Championships of the 3rd World University Games, Our team won the first place of 200-meter straight racing;

At Dragon Boat Contest of Shanghai Citizens Sports Games, we won four golden medals and  one silver medal;

At Suzhou River International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament, we won the first place of college group.

2、 Swimming Team

The Brief Introduction of Swimming Team

 

The Dragon Boat Team of Shanghai Maritime University was founded in 1977. Most of its members were common college students at the beginning. With the concern and support of the university leadership, the constant efforts made by the previous coaches and members, the scale of the swimming team becomes larger and its influence greater, and the team has made great achievements. At the end of 2005, the team was assessed and named by the Ministry of Education as High Lever Sports Team.

Now swimming team has 24 team members, among whom 12 are master-level athletes and 12 are first-class athletes.

   In the past three years, four of the team members have won the school special scholarship, five the school first-class scholarship, nine the school second-class scholarship. Four of them have attained Miyoshi Students title. Three of them have been directly admitted as postgraduates with the exemption from National Master’s Entrance Test. Two of them have become Chinese communist party members and five the probationary party members. Many of them have defined as activists. The swim team has enjoyed a good reputation in the university.

Prizes won in 2012:

Two gold medals and one silver medal won in the individual event of FINA Diving Grand Prix.

One gold medal, three silver medal and two bronze medals won in the individual event of the swimming competition of the 9th National Universiade and two universidade records broken

Ten gold medals, fifteen silver medals and ten bronze medals won in the individual event of the Swimming Competition of Shanghai Students Games, and the second place in both men’s and women’s team event.

3、 Martial Arts Team

The Brief Introduction of Martial Arts Team

The Martial Arts Team of Shanghai Maritime University was founded in 1985. At the end of 2005, the team was assessed and named by the Ministry of Education as High Lever Sports Team. The members of martial arts team are not only with high morality and superb skills but also with rigorous team principles and solidarity spirit. They have made great achievements in the all previous national universiades and national college students’ martial arts competitions, especially in 2012 when they won the first golden medal in the Martial Arts Competition of the 9th National Universiade for the shanghai team and were praised by the municipal leaders. Now our martial art team is famous among the universities in Shanghai, even all around the country, and enjoys high reputation in the martial arts circle.

The slogan and objective of the Martial Arts Team of Shanghai Maritime University are:

Setting up and managing first class college martial arts sports team

Setting up and managing first class national martial arts sports team

Setting up and managing first class international martial arts sports team

At present the team has thirty members, among whom eight are Wuying-level athletes, nine first-class athletes, and thirteen second-class athletes.

Solidarity and hard working are the excellent tradition of the martial arts team, and winning prizes is the aim of every member. On the field, they are not afraid of strong opponents, and struggle to win the prizes and honors for our university again and again.

Five gold medals, five silver medals and one bronze medal won in men’s group B of the Martial Arts Competition in Shanghai College Students Games

The members of the martial arts team not only endeavor to win prizes on the field, but also make great achievements in study and other aspects. In the past two years, six of the members have won the college special scholarship, four the school first-class scholarship,four the school excellent students title. Besides, three of them have been directly admitted as postgraduates with the exemption from National Master's Entrance Test. Three of them have become Chinese communist party members and four the probationary party members. The martial arts team has enjoyed a good reputation in the university. The members not only have superb skills but also take an active part in the school clubs and recreational activities. Wherever there are major festivals and art performance, the team are invented.
